When Penélope Cruz signed on to play Angelica in Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides she was excited—and for several very good reasons.
In the movie Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds himself on an unexpected journey to the fabled Fountain of Youth when a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).
First of all, it was her first role in a high-budget action movie. “I love working in Europe and most of the times when I’m working in America, I tend to choose smaller projects with less action, because that’s where I find the most interesting characters,” Cruz says, “but I have to say that here I found both. I found a very interesting character in a movie that is really big and it gave me the opportunity to see how those movies are made. And I love the pirate world because it’s so attractive and so interesting.”
The fourth film in the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides, doesn’t open until May 20, but these four brand new clips, featuring stars Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz and others, should tide fans over.

The Spanish actress took up ballet when she was a child and fell in love with the graceful movements. Although she had to quit when she decided to pursue a career in acting, she showed off her skills for musical movie Nine. Penélope is a huge fan of dark thriller Black Swan, which saw Natalie Portman win an Oscar for her portrayal of a tortured ballet star, because it took her back to her dancing youth.
“It touched me. I saw a lot of things in that movie that resonated with my own experiences,” Penélope said about Black Swan in an interview with GQ. “The discipline that ballet requires is obsessive. And only the ones who dedicate their whole lives are able to make it. Your toenails fall off and you peel them away and then you’re asked to dance again and keep smiling. I wanted to become a professional ballet dancer. And then I had to choose.”
Penélope’s parents encouraged her to take dance classes because she had so much energy. They decided ballet would be a good outlet for Penélope as it is so physically demanding.

Penélope Cruz has revealed she has caught the musical bug after starring in 2009 film Nine.
The actress said she and husband Javier Bardem can’t get enough of musical series Glee, and added that she would jump at the chance to flex her own pipes again.
She told Entertainment Weekly: ‘It’s actually the only thing that I watch on television. Gwyneth [Paltrow] was amazing. Once you’ve done a musical you always want to do it again. I would love to do more musicals, in TV or film. Not on Broadway, because I’m not brave enough to do that yet. But I love musicals.’
