The teaser trailer for celebrated and profilic director Pedro Almodóvar and Penélope Cruz’s newest collaboration, Los abrazos rotos aka Broken Embraces has hit the web! Watch it here or after the cut. While the teaser doesn’t reveal much, it’s mystery and stunning imagery will haunt and interest you for sure. LQ Screencaptures follow accordingly. (Will replace if a better version is released.)
Exact details on the film are still scant but Almodóvar has stated that the film will resemble a 1950s American film noir but will be set in the 1990s.
“Penélope’s character in my film lives two very different, almost opposing, lives, that naturally must be characterized, among other things, by very different hairstyles. In the first characterisation, Penélope is brunette, serious, hurt, pursued by fatality, a fighter with no luck, a fallen angel. A woman taken from a 50s thriller and transferred to the 90s. In the other facet of the character, she appears as blonde, light, pop, naïve, outrageous, exultant.” – Pedro Almodóvar
The film will be released in March of this year in Spain and will have limited release in the U.S. starting in November of 2009.

That’s what the Oscars nominee told Gold Derby tonight when I called her in Madrid to ask her what she’d do next Sunday when this derby race is done, the victor is known and, win or lose, she can finally catch her breath.
Penelope Cruz has four extra tickets to the ceremony, so she’ll be at the Academy Awards with her brother, sister, mom (dad got to go to Golden Globes and BAFTA) “and one of my best friends from Spain from when I was a little girl,” she said. “I want my family to have a good night. To win, it would be an amazing thing! But I want to enjoy the night and the people around me.”
With Oscar weekend quickly approaching, AMC debuts its new primetime special, Storymakers.
Premiering at 7 p.m. Friday (Feb 13), the special, hosted by entertainment industry veterans Peter Bart and Peter Guber, features an intimate gathering of A-list actors in a round-table discussion about entertainment headlines. Topics range from Oscars, summer movies and holiday films to the actor’s craft, guests’ current projects and the general state of the entertainment industry.
Oscar nominees taking part in the discussion include Penelope Cruz (best supporting actress, Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Danny Boyle (best director, Slumdog Millionaire), Amy Adams (best supporting actress, Doubt), Frank Langella (best actor, Frost/Nixon) and Melissa Leo (best actress, Frozen River).
Penelope Cruz says singing in her new movie Nine was “scary”.
The Spanish actress – who plays a mistress in the upcoming film – found the whole experience exciting – but she is not sure she would do a musical again because she gets so nervous when she has to sing.
She explains, “It was very interesting. Very intense, a very different experience.
“It’s the first time I’ve had to sing in a movie, so that was very scary. It was one of the most daunting things I’ve ever had to do, but it was so much fun at the same time. I loved it.”
Nine - which also stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson and Judi Dench – hits theaters in November this year.

A few days ago the British Academy Film Awards 2009 were held at the Royal Opera House in London, UK. Penélope Cruz picked up Best Supporting Actress and wore a dress by Azzedine Alaia gown with Chopard jewels and opted for her hair in high updo hairstyle, showing of newly cropped bangs. Honestly not loving the look, but congrats to Miss Cruz on her most deservered win and thats whats important afterall!
I’ve now added HQ pictures and screencaps of Pe and her win, enjoy!
The LA Times has an interesting article about the Oscars. Predicting Amy Adams could go as far as pull off an ‘upset’ and win (being that Cruz is favored at the moment). I found it interesting and being huge fans of both Amy Adams and Penélope Cruz and found both performers in that category at their very best and I go back and fourth as to who I want to win. Either way, I’m sure I’ll be happy with the results but we shall see come Oscar night, February 22!
When Tariq Khan makes a bold Oscar prediction, take heed. He’s one of the savviest Oscarologists I know and this year he’s going where no other guru dares: out onto a thin, shaky limb for Amy Adams (Doubt) for supporting actress. Interesting call! That category, after all, is where most Oscar upsets happen.
Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman’s new film Nine is going sweep the board during the 2010 awards season, according to movie producer Harvey Weinstein.
The film – based on the Broadway musical about film director Guido Contini and the many women in his life – has only just finished shooting, but with an all-star cast including Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Kate Hudson and Black Eyed Pea Fergie it is set to dazzle.
Harvey, who watched the latest film gongs being handed out at the 2009 Baftas in London, was asked if Nine would be out for awards season next year. He said: “Oh yeah, most definitely. You’ll see a lot of nominations. You’ll see a lot of dancing too. Really, this is a great musical, a lot of great musical numbers.
Penelope Cruz has confessed she couldn’t laugh at Vicky Cristina Barcelona because she loved her character too much.
The Spanish star – who has won a Bafta and been nominated for an Oscar for playing suicidal artist Maria Elena in Woody Allen’s comedy – previously told how at the movie’s first screening at Cannes Film Festival last year, she didn’t understand why people were laughing.
Spanish actress Penelope Cruz does not believe in celebrating Valentine’s Day. She believes matters of heart are too personal for public display.
The gorgeous actress who has dated Hollywood’s leading men including Tom Cruise and Matthew McConaughey in the past, is not excited by the idea of celebrating love on Valentine’s Day. So much so, she doesn’t even want to talk about her love life.
Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces)- Yet another film from Spain’s celebrated and profilic director Pedro Almodóvar (Volver, Talk to Her, Bad Education). Exact details on the film are still scant but Almodóvar has stated that the film will resemble a 1950s American film noir but will be set in the 1990s. The film will star Penélope Cruz who also appeared in Almodóvar’s Todo Sobre mi Madre (All About My Mother) and Volver. True to Almodóvar’s style, he devoted a good portion of his blog to Cruz’s character and hairstyles in Abrazos:
Penélope Cruz has said that she has a much-improved work-life balance compared to her younger days.
The Vicky Cristina Barcelona star has revealed she has had two breakdowns, the first when she was just 17.
She said: “I’ve worked myself to exhaustion in the past but now my life feels more balanced. Once my life was all about work, yet now I do take time for myself.
“It was a hard lesson to learn that sometimes it is so much healthier to say no even to a role that you like.”
Penélope Cruz is featured in the NY Times Great Performances portfolio. She’s being honored with a feature for her work in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Click on the link to listen to the commentary about her shoot.
For the issue, actors were photographed with little make-up and hairstyling and with candid imagery. Cruz was photographed on the set of Nine, she’s seen rehearsing a dance number for the very first time! She’s also snapped back in New York before what would become her Gotham Award win. The images are stunning; just candid and gorgeous!
Other celebrities featured include Kate Winslet (honored for The Reader and Revolutionary Road), Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder and Iron Man), Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Sean Penn (Milk), Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon). Winslet is on the cover.
