We’ve been hearing the rumors all summer long and I have not wanted to post on the subject until we heard something official since we do not follow gossipy news on this site.
At TIFF Penelope was asked about it, but her publicist moved her along to the next question. While a bit later Miss Cruz opened up to USA Today’s Donna Freydkin on the red carpet and said “I start getting some presents from friends saying, ‘Congratulations, you’re pregnant.’ And I say, ‘No, I’m not, so return the presents,’” she told Donna. “It’s amazing.”
The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend.
Walt Disney Pictures’ G-Force, producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s first 3-D film, debuted in the top spot at the domestic box office with an estimated $32.2 million from 3,697 theaters. The comedy adventure, about highly trained guinea pigs, was directed by visual effects guru Hoyt Yeatman and stars Bill Nighy, Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell, Jon Favreau, Penelope Cruz, Steve Buscemi, Tracy Morgan and Kelli Garner. It averaged $8,697 per theater for the three days.
Spanish director Pedro Almodovar pays homage to filmmaking and his muse Penelope Cruz in Broken Embraces, a movie about a director who has a passionate affair with his leading lady
The picture, Almodovar’s fourth collaboration with Cruz, which is in competition at the Cannes film festival, recalls “films noirs,” classic comedies and screen sirens of the past.
It includes a scene from Roberto Rossellini’s Viaggio In Italia starring Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders and the film-within-a-film revisits Almodovar’s 1988 hit Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown.
“I fully believe that cinema can make life more perfect,” the Oscar winner told reporters recently after Broken Embraces was warmly applauded at a press screening.
It’s very likely many have seen at least one 2009 best picture nominee, or maybe even the winner. And now that Cannes is only a memory, it’s time to shuffle through the possibilities before the onslaught of Venice, Telluride and Toronto speculation.
It’s possible any of the noted foreign films could spill over into a few other categories. Perhaps Penelope Cruz has an outside shot at best actress for Rotos (though the film’s relatively mild reception doesn’t bode particularly well), as does non-Cannes foreign entry Coco Before Chanel‘s lead Audrey Tatou (the film has already opened in France, where it’s been a huge success). Screenplay, and occasionally director, have always had a tendency to be supplementary gifts for foreign language films, so if Ribbon or Prophet in particular really take off with critics this fall (which I’m sure they will), it could happen. But for the major categories, one should always look to the English language, as that’s how Oscar voters tend to like their movies.
Spanish high street fashion retailer Mango has signed actress Scarlett Johansson to front its autumn/winter advertising campaign.
Johansson takes over as the face of the international retailer from Penelope Cruz, who she recently co-starred with in Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona.
The retailer says it chose the actor as she embodies the “urban, independent and cosmopolitan woman’ who is also ‘serene and elegant, yet fun-loving and youthful all at the same time’ in keeping with its brand values.
The appointment marks the end of Cruz’s four season stint with the brand. Johansson is the second actress to front for the brand, following a long line of supermodels including Naiomi Cmapbell and Christy Turlington.
Penelope Cruz has revealed she acted as a go-between passing messages between two legendary directors while making her latest film.
The star shot Broken Embraces with fellow Spaniard Pedro Almodovar at the same time as making Vicky Cristina Barcelona with Woody Allen.
She said: “It was good to be able to pass each of them messages – they seem to like each other very much.”
The movie got an explosive reaction from the crowd, another extended standing ovation and reaction from the earlier press screening was also buoyant. Many have noted that the noir-ish tale of love and jealousy is a darker tale for the filmmaker, but the movie also has many moments of humor.

Yesterday Penélope was in Cannes for the Broken Embraces photocall, press conference and premiere. She was stunning as always, at the photocall wearing a nude number and for the premiere she wore a lilac chiffon draped strapless Marchesa Fall 2009 gown, with an embroidered bodice and her hair swept softly back. Such a goddess!
The gallery has now been updated with over 500 images from all of these events. Enjoy!
The Cannes Film Festival’s photocall for Broken Embraces was just underway. Next it will be followed by a press conference and the premiere tonight. Check back for tons of photos later today!
Last night in Cannes Penelope Cruz hosted a Domino contest in aid of Bono’s Red charity. It seems she is feel better despite some food poisoning earlier that day. Never the less she looked stunning in a white gown!
A few days ago the Nine trailer was released! You can watch it in glorious high definition here. I have to say I’m super excited, all the ladies look fantastic and especially Miss Cruz looks to die for! Nine hits North American theatres on November 25, 2009.
Penélope Cruz graces the May issue of Elle France. She looks fabulous in yet another new photoshoot! She’s also on the cover of Yellow (Czech).
Even the biggest stars aren’t immune to getting hit by stomach bugs it seems. Penelope Cruz had to miss out on promoting her upcoming musical Nine in Cannes Monday, sidelined by “some sort of food poisoning.”
In France to premiere her movie Broken Embraces, which is directed by Pedro Almodóvar, she was slated to join movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in presenting a trailer and a teaser for Nine, but fell ill.
Weinstein passed on the bad news to a select group of journalists: “Tomorrow night is her premiere for her movie. She is getting better and is seeing a doctor right now.”
We want to wish Miss Cruz a speedy recovery!
