Penelope Cruz has been nominated for a Film Independent’s Spirit Award in the Supporting Female category for Vicky Cristina Barcelona! View the full list of nominees here.
A wax figure of one of Spain’s foremost leading ladies Penelope Cruz has made its US debut at Madame Tussaud’s in Washington DC.
Staff at the museum rolled out the red carpet for the Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee’s wax likeness.
Cruz’s figure arrived to her debut in a black v-neck shirt and palazzo pants that showed off her physique, complimented by chic peep toed shoes and diamond accessories.
According to Madame Tussauds’ publicists studio artists studied hundreds of photos and hours of video footage to ensure Cruz’s figure would be as accurate as possible.
A bona fide movie star in her native country Spain, Cruz’s career in the US took off in 2001 with her role in Vanilla Sky.
She went on to become the first Spanish actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Volver.
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor her as Outstanding Performer of The Year in January.
I thought this was so cute!
Penelope Cruz looks so similar to her sister Monica, she sometimes confuses herself.
The Hollywood beauty shares twin-like facial features with her younger sibling, and Cruz admits she is stunned by how alike they look.
She says, “The other day we were sitting together in the back of the car and I was looking in the rear view mirror and a very strange thing happened: I thought I was looking at my face and it was hers!”
Woody Allen was more interested in a stain on his hand than filming the much-talked about lesbian kiss between Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson.
Spanish beauty Penelope revealed that the director was so concerned about a mark that had mysteriously appeared on his hand that he left the set to go to see a dermatologist.
The director had been filming a scene between Penelope and co-star Scarlett where they kiss in a darkroom for the film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which premiered last night at London Film Festival’s Sky Movies HD Gala.
“Everyone’s been talking about this kiss between me and Scarlett but on the day all the attention was on Woody and the stain on his hand,” she said.
“Even when we resumed filming he was still looking at it!”

Congratulations to our girl for this wonderful honor!
Penelope Cruz – who’s appearing in two current films, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Elegy – will be honored as the outstanding performer of the year at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, which runs Jan. 22-Feb.1. Cruz will be presented with the award at the Arlington Theatre on Jan. 31.
“There are few actresses who can today be described as international movie goddesses, and this year, with her exceptional work in Elegy and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Penelope Cruz has earned that description,” SBIFF executive director Roger Durling said.
Cruz was first introduced to American audiences in the Spanish films Jamon, Jamon and Belle Epoque. She frequently works with director Pedro Almodovar, appearing in his films Live Flesh, All About My Mother, Volver, for which she earned a best actress Academy Award nomination, and the upcoming Los Abrazos Rotos.
Penelope Cruz is looking for a temporary home in London. The Spanish actress, 34, who is coming to the capital next month to spend five months rehearsing and filming the musical Nine, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench and Nicole Kidman, is looking for a property to rent for £2,500 a week. “She wants a short-let, three-bedroom house in the Richmond area with a driveway and landscaped garden,” says my source.
Timing of its release couldn’t be better for the Oscars prospects of Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which comes just months after its star Javier Bardem, sporting the creepiest hairdo this side of Donald Trump and Jacko, terrified Hollywood into handing over piles of academy gold to No Country for Old Men.
At the previous Oscars, Penelope Cruz (Volver) posed the most serious threat to usurp Helen Mirren (The Queen) in the best-actress race but, having failed, now seems due to reign too. At the derby before that, many Oscarwatchers thought Woody Allen would finally have his big comeback, but Match Point, despite nabbing a screenplay nomination, didn’t catch fire, so the three-time winner is now sparking new heat.
