Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall revealed how they handled news of Penelope’s pregnancy just one week before filming began.

“We were like, uhhhhh. I said, ‘Are you going to be okay sword fighting with a baby in your stomach?’ But she was up for it,” he recalled.

“She said she’d understand if we had to replace her, but she didn’t want to be replaced. It took more time, ultimately, but she was worth it,” he added.

As for whether or not this will be the last time fans will see Captain Jack, Rob teased, “It’s like the James Bond series. I think there are probably lots of stories still to tell.”

The actress talks in the new THR magazine about preparing for the film’s stuntwork, meeting Mother Theresa and the unique scale of the Pirate.

When did Rob Marshall first mention the movie to you?

We were doing [dialogue work] for Nine. We were in a restaurant in London, and he waited until the dessert and said in a very casual way, “Oh, would you like to do Pirates with me and Johnny?” I jumped from the chair! I said, “Why didn’t you tell me the first second we sat down?”

Did your pregnancy affect working?

It helped that I was a dancer for so many years and worked on the fight choreography for two months before I was pregnant. I really knew all the fights because Rob put them together almost as a dance, the way we had trained for Nine. That helped, and when we shot, I never did anything dangerous.

Penélope Cruz is featured on the cover of the upcoming June issue of Vogue magazine. She looks absolutely gorgeous, perhaps one of the most stunning covers of her I’ve seen in some time! I can’t wait to pick this issue up!

Penélope Cruz is on the cover of Marie Claire (France) for this month. It is not a new photoshoot but scans have been added.

Penélope Cruz was in Madrid to pose for Vogue magazine, before the camera of famous photographer Peter Lindberg.

She posed pregnant, as did other celebrities like Demi Moore, Claudia Schiffer and Britney Spears. It is not known whether she will appear naked like the others or not, but the photos of Penélope are unpationately expected in the magazine.

Rumors about a possible pregnancy of the actress began circulating this year, after the appearance of some of her photos and the announcement of her marriage with actor Javier Bardem in July in the Bahamas. They were confirmed on 14 September, after the actress’ representative Antonio Rubin said that Penelope Cruz is fourth month pregnant.

Penélope Cruz guest-edited next month’s French Vogue, which has three different covers.

One cover sees modern day screen legends Penélope, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Watts. All the ladies are wearing (RED) clothing, designed to eliminate AIDS in Africa.

While on the other covers, she poses as the other half of Bono’s face, and finally, she toplessly embraces Meryl Streep.

I do not have access to this magazine but I’m hoping we will have scans soon. Please consider donating the other various Pe covers if you manage to obtain and scan them – it would be tremendously appreciated! I can’t wait to see the inside contents!

Penélope Cruz and Daniel Day-Lewis of Nine are featured in the seventh annual NY Times Great Performances Portfolio for 2010. The issue is a photographic celebration of the year’s best performances, and they have chosen actors who stunned and delighted us this past year. It was the February 21, 2010 issue. She was in it last year as well. Coincidentally photographed exclusively on the set of Nine.

I previously reported Penélope Cruz would be featured in the upcoming Vanity Fair Hollywood Portfolio for 2010 which is the March issue, and now we have an adorable image and behind the scenes video from the mag. Four films together: Live Flesh (1997), All About My Mother (1999), Volver (2006), and Broken Embraces (2009).

Broken Embraces has a valedictory feel to it, or at least it conveys a sense that the 60-year-old Almodóvar—a man for whom it was once compulsory to use the words enfant terrible—is taking stock of his life. The movie is about a filmmaker, cruelly robbed of sight, who recounts to a young man the tragic story of his greatest love: a stunning beauty he rescued from the gilded clutches of kept-womanhood. There are stylistic nods to the 1950s weepie-meister Douglas Sirk and to Michael Powell’s sick-joke movie Peeping Tom. There are glimpses of the movie that the director made with his doomed love, a Day-Glo bauble that harkens back to Almodóvar’s youthful 1980s “wacky” period. And there is Cruz. Almodóvar uses his fractured narrative to frame her in all manner of looks and ways: in a Marilyn wig, in drab secretarial gear, in the Chuck Close–like pixelation of enlarged, super-slo-mo playback … all in the cause of proving that the camera loves her as much as ol’ Pedro does.
